Origins

For Neo-Fanfare 9x13, 4'

Origins was written for the 2025 Dag van de Componist (in the Netherlands), where cities feature a number of performances at train stations, busy locations, and cultural centers. I had the pleasure of working with Neo-Fanfare 9x13 on this piece to be performed in the so-called 'trap-theater' (stair-theater) in the ground hallway in the Amare building in The Hague.

The piece is a response to the notion of a necessity for complexity and the idea of writer's block as a failure to find inspiring material, through simplicity and similarity, yet with hopefully tasteful manipulation; that which I believe a composer is responsible for providing. Thus the piece is constructed using only 4 distinct pitches (or pitch-classes in technical terms) and one melodic motif.
